FASHION WEEK INSPIRED

slider

It’s September 7 here in New York and that means it’s the eve of New York’s Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week and today I received a message from a designer whose exclusive line of eyewear will be featured on the runway during the week.

The message read “You inspired me to do something amazing with my eyewear. When we first met, you told me you like to give back to charities. So I thought hey I should use my brand to give a percentage of every piece to a children’s charity (message continued).”

I won’t reveal which designer at this stage as I will let him announce the initiative during fashion week but I wanted to share the lessons that came out of this for me.

Back up two weeks I had been out for some Friday night drinks and stopped in to a quiet little place for a quick bite to eat. I saw (designer) and decided that I wanted to introduce myself, quietly hoping for a date. I simply went up to the person handed him my business card and said I was sorryto interrupt you but I would love to catch up at some point, call me.

Socially that was quite a “gutsy” thing for me to do and I never really thought of anything would come of it. Some five minutes later I had a text message saying hey we can catch up now and so we did . We grabbed some drinks and spent the next 3 hours chatting about a whole range of things, what inspires me what inspires this person.

While it wasn’t the hot steamy date that I had initially hoped for it did lead to a great connection in an industry that I know little about and I am deeply humbled that I was able to inspire someone to give back to the community.

The take-away for me is simple, be brave, be bold and go up and say hello to that person you want to meet, whatever the reason – you just don’t know where it could lead.

Meet someone new today.

PEOPLE HELPING PEOPLE

People Helping People

Today August 19 is World Humanitarian Day and I had the honor of attending the headquarters of the United Nations in New York. Valerie Amos, Baroness Amos the eighth and current Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordination, Ban Ki-moon the Secretary General and Anthony Lake, Executive Director UNICEF each addressed those in attendance.

The UN General Assembly proclaimed August 19 as World Humanitarian Day three years ago in commemoration of the 2003 Canal Hotel bombing in Baghdad, which claimed the lives of 22 UN staff members.

Today though is much more than the memory of those that have died in the pursuit of enabling peace and providing aid but also to pay our respects to those currently serving across the globe to make a difference to communities suffering.

It is also a day where the plight of those in need is highlighted and the breadth and depth of the work of the UN can be appreciated. This years theme is People Helping People and to mark this new campaign Valerie Amos and her team launched a song and video to spread the word.

It reminds us, that all of us can  make a difference in our community, it just takes a simple act of kindness, care and compassion. You can also make financial contributions to the UN and their partner organizations which helps bring care and support to people across the world.

On a personal note I have always actively contributed to the communities I live, work and play in from giving time, in-kind support and financial contributions. I find it very rewarding and helps my personal growth to actively give my time to help causes that are important to me.

I encourage you to get involved and help make the world a better place for all.

AUTHENTIC ME

slider

It seems a lot of people are talking about the need to be authentic these days and of course everyone has their own spin on it.

I wanted to take a quick time out to throw my thoughts in to the conversation loop on the topic of personal authenticity.

So first of all wikipedia describes authenticity as  truthfulness of origins, attributions, commitments, sincerity, devotion, and intentions. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Authentic)

First and foremost I agree that it is important to be authentic, but isn’t it just another label, can’t we just be ourselves? Society seems busy defining types of behavior instead of just being, living and enjoying?

Have we really built a society where is is not the norm to be ourselves – I fear that we may have, but what we build we can reshape and mould into a better version, right?

For my part I always am just being me and it is why for example my twitter feed is all me and not separated into personal and business accounts. Many people suggest I should have separate accounts and I understand why but my approach is that when you connect with me, you get all of me, so why should twitter be any different, we all have our good, our bad and our great days – so I feel online should reflect the total me.

I feel if I live each moment being me, making commitments I genuinely believe I can deliver on and living with passion and respect, that is being authentic.

I encourage you to reflect on what authentic means to you and how being authentic can empower your life.
